A group of local ladies has been playing poker every Wednesday evening for more than 15 years. They get together for a few rounds and prove the game is not boys-only. Deanna Hoenck, one of the ladies, has been playing poker for more than 50 years. The 4 “Wednesday Night Poker Ladies take turns hosting the event each week. According to Hoenck they rotate alphabetically by last name and who turns out to be the hostess has to provide snacks, coffee and desserts for the evening. Around the holidays they coordinate potluck dinners.
Recently the ladies participated in local poker tournaments. The Gilroy Community Services Department sponsoreds them with the goal to raise money for community programs. They took third place in the Garlic and End-of-Summer No-Limit Hold ’Em Poker tournaments.
